Why Medicine Hat?
Alberta is Agriculture and nowhere in the province is that more evident than in the area surrounding Medicine Hat AB. Situated among some of Canada’s most productive farm and ranch land, and located on the TransCanada Highway and Canadian Pacific mainline, Medicine Hat offers easy access to producers of commodities and specialty crops, not to mention a skilled labour force and high quality of life.
Medicine Hat serves a very large trading area and is far from the other shows in both AB and SK. Farmers and Ranchers in the area often find it challenging to get to the other major Ag Events whether due to distance or timing, or weather-related issues.
A closer look at Alberta Agriculture
Alberta’s agricultural sector is a crucial contributor to the province’s economy, contributing $9.68 billion to the GDP in 2020 and employing over 69,800 individuals. It offers superior-quality primary products and is the third-largest exporter of agri-food products in Canada.
Agricultural exports in 2021 exceeded $14.1 billion, with $5.8 billion being primary agricultural products and $8.3 billion in value-added products.
Southern Alberta is a major producer and exporter of top-notch primary and processed agricultural products. Its crop sector is highly diversified, encompassing a variety of crops such as wheat, oats, barley, canola, pulses, and more. In addition, Alberta is the leading beef-producing province in Canada, and is a significant exporter of beef and live cattle.
The St. Mary River Irrigation District (SMRID) is Canada’s largest irrigation district delivering water through 2060 km (1280 miles) of canals and pipelines to approximately 150,500 hectares (372,000 acres) of land south of the Oldman and South Saskatchewan Rivers between Lethbridge and Medicine Hat, Alberta.

In 2021, there were 40 commercial greenhouses in the Medicine Hat region with 6,580,103 sq. ft. (611,312 sq. m.) under production.

In 2021, 44% of the total greenhouse square footage in Alberta was located in Census Agricultural Division 1 (Medicine Hat/Hanna)

In 2021, there were 83 pig farms in the Medicine Hat region with 203,283 animals
